What is solar energy?

Solar energy is derived from the Sun’s radiation.

Wind turbines are capable of generating electricity 24/7 (provided there is enough wind), but the more consistent availability of sunlight compared to wind makes panels the more reliable option. 

Which should you choose: solar panels or wind turbines? 

Solar and wind power are two of the UK’s most important energy sources. According to the National Grid, wind power contributed 29.4% of the country’s total electricity generation in 2023, while solar power contributed 4.9%.

While wind power’s perceived dominance may suggest it’s more efficient, this discrepancy is mainly due to the ways each energy source is practically applied. 

Wind turbines are used more for small-scale commercial and industrial purposes. The National Grid notes that there are 1,500 operational onshore wind farms and 2,200 wind turbines across 35 offshore windfarms off the coast of the UK. 

They’re significantly more effective in large-scale projects than individual installations. Solar power, however, is equally effective for both large and small-scale applications.
