Plug-In Solar Is Now Legal in the UK: What It Means and What It Doesn’t

Today, 27 August 2026, plug-in solar officially becomes legal in the UK. It’s a genuine milestone for the solar industry and a moment worth acknowledging. For years, these small balcony-style solar kits sat in a regulatory grey area, and now the government has cleared the path with a statutory instrument that gives homeowners a legitimate, recognised route to self-install a compact solar device.

We think that’s a good thing. More people engaging with solar generation, in any form, is broadly positive for the energy transition and for consumer awareness. But as a company that has designed and installed thousands of solar systems across the UK, we also think it’s important to be straight about what today’s change actually means in practice, and where its limits lie.

The short version: plug-in solar is a useful entry point for some households. It is not a substitute for a professionally designed and installed solar system.

What Changed Today, and Why

Until today, plug-in solar sat in an awkward legal grey area. The rules around home wiring treated anything that generates electricity in your home as a fixed installation, which meant you technically needed a qualified electrician involved. On top of that, separate product safety regulations made it difficult for retailers to sell these kits for their intended purpose through normal shops.

The new legislation, SI 2026 No. 848, clears both of those hurdles for products that meet the new safety standards. It was signed off by the government on 16 July 2026 and takes effect today, as part of the government’s Clean Power 2030 push.

What the new rules actually allow

The rules are fairly specific about what counts as a legal plug-in solar device. To comply, a kit must:

  • Generate no more than 800W of power through its inverter (the box that converts solar energy into usable electricity)
  • Have a maximum of 2,000W of solar panels, across no more than four panels
  • Plug into a normal UK wall socket using a standard UK plug that’s fitted at the factory
  • Be listed and verified as compliant on an official product register (the ENA Type Test Register)
  • Come with a compliance declaration under the new product specification

One other rule worth knowing: you can currently only have one device per household. You also need to notify your local electricity network operator before the device starts sending power back to the grid. It’s a straightforward online form, but it’s not optional.

One significant exclusion: battery storage. Today’s legislation only covers solar panels paired with a basic inverter. Plug-in batteries, and any solar-plus-battery kit sold together, are not covered by the new rules.

Who Plug-In Solar Is Actually For

It’s worth being honest about the audience this technology genuinely serves. Plug-in solar makes the most sense for:

  • Renters who can’t make structural changes to a property but want to generate some of their own electricity
  • Flat and apartment dwellers with a south-facing balcony or garden space, who have no route to a rooftop installation
  • Homeowners who want to dip a toe in before committing to a full system
  • Households in rented accommodation where landlord permission for a full installation isn’t forthcoming

For these groups, a compliant plug-in kit is a meaningful step. It’s now a recognised, legitimate way to generate electricity at home, and the regulations have finally caught up with what much of Europe has been doing for years.

What it isn’t is a complete answer to a household’s energy needs. An 800W device plugged into a single socket will take a small bite out of your electricity consumption. How much it actually saves you depends on when you use electricity, how much of the solar power you use directly rather than exporting, and how much sun your panels get. Treat any headline savings figures with a healthy dose of scepticism, particularly ones that assume everything works out perfectly.

Where a Professional Installation Is in a Different League

For homeowners who own their property and are serious about reducing their energy bills, a professionally designed and installed solar system is a fundamentally different proposition. The comparison isn’t really fair to either technology, because they’re solving different problems at different scales.

Here’s where the gap becomes clear:

Generation potential

A plug-in device is capped at 800W output. A professionally designed rooftop system is sized specifically for your home, your roof orientation, your shading profile, and your consumption patterns. A typical domestic installation generates many times more electricity annually, giving you a meaningfully larger offset of your household demand.

Electrical safety and compliance

A professional installation is carried out by accredited engineers who work to the full electrical safety standards for solar PV systems. The installation is properly certified and signed off as part of your home’s electrical setup. That matters not just for safety, but for your home insurance, your mortgage, and when you come to sell.

Battery storage and smart technology integration

This is probably the biggest limitation of today’s legislation: plug-in batteries are not included. A professionally installed system can incorporate a home battery, so the solar energy you generate during the day gets stored and used in the evening when you actually need it most. That’s where the real saving potential comes from. A full installation can also connect to EV charging, smart energy management systems, and the Smart Export Guarantee, which pays you for any surplus electricity you send back to the grid. None of that is possible with a plug-in device.

Warranties, ongoing support, and maintenance

A professionally installed system comes with manufacturer warranties on panels and inverters, an installation warranty, and access to ongoing support if anything needs attention. A plug-in kit is, ultimately, a consumer electronics product. The level of aftercare is not comparable.

The bottom line: plug-in solar and a professionally installed system are not on the same spectrum. They serve different needs, at different scales, with different levels of protection and performance.

A Word on Buying Compliant Kit

If you’re considering a plug-in kit, it’s worth knowing that today’s law change doesn’t automatically make every product on sale legal. It only applies to kits that meet the new safety standards. The fact that something is being sold doesn’t mean it qualifies.

Before buying, check for two things:

  1. A declaration that the product meets the Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification
  2. Confirmation it appears on the ENA Type Test Register as verified (not just listed)

Be cautious about kits sold on online marketplaces, particularly anything with a European-style plug and no UK documentation. Retailers expected to stock compliant products include B&Q, Currys, Screwfix, and Wickes, which is a reasonable place to start.

We welcome today’s change. Anything that lowers the barrier to solar adoption and gets more people thinking seriously about generating their own electricity is positive for the industry and for the UK’s clean energy ambitions.
