“My First Bill Was Basically Nothing”: How Solar Panels Changed the Numbers for Artur
As part of a national campaign to help lower people’s energy bills ahead of winter, Project Solar has been taking a closer look at where the real financial benefits of solar power lie, and how much households could potentially save over time.
51-year-old finance worker, Artur Klotz, from Reading, said it was the ‘significant’ increase in energy bills over the last few years which ultimately became the deciding factor in his choice.
He said: “I’m a finance guy. I work mainly in financial planning and analysis, looking at costs, business performance, and helping businesses make better financial decisions.
“So, unsurprisingly, when it came to solar panels, I was very interested in understanding both the practical benefits and the numbers behind the investment.
“Like everyone else, we had seen energy bills increase significantly over the last few years, so becoming a little less dependent on electricity prices was attractive.
“We also bought an electric car, so having access to cheaper energy for charging became increasingly important.
“And, of course, there is the environmental side. That matters to me too. If we can generate more of our own electricity, reduce what we take from the grid, and at the same time save some money, it feels like a win-win.”
Artur said his electricity bills have fallen significantly.
He added: “Our electricity costs have fallen significantly, at the moment, on some days, it feels as though the standing charge is becoming one of the biggest parts of the bill, which is quite a nice problem to have!
“We’re also being paid for the electricity we export back to the grid, so that’s an additional benefit.
“We had our first bill come this month and it was basically nothing.”
Over the next 12 months, Artur expects to see savings of around £500 to £600.
He said: “It’s still very early to give an accurate figure because we haven’t yet experienced a full winter with the system.
“But based on what I’ve seen so far, including both the reduction in electricity we buy from the grid and the income from exporting surplus electricity, I think somewhere around £500–£600 per year is a reasonable initial estimate.
“My wife was quite apprehensive about the idea at the beginning. Now she says, “I love the solar panels!”

Artur is refreshingly candid about his motivations. Rising energy costs were the trigger, but his instinct was to treat the whole thing like a business case.
“I’m a finance guy,” he says. “I work mainly in financial planning and analysis, looking at costs, business performance, and helping businesses make better financial decisions. So, unsurprisingly, when it came to solar panels, I was very interested in understanding both the practical benefits and the numbers behind the investment.”
That analytical mindset is something a lot of homeowners share, even if they don’t have a finance background. The question isn’t just “will this save me money?” It’s “how much, how soon, and is it worth the upfront commitment?”
For Artur, three things pushed the decision over the line:

Each of those factors on its own might not have been enough. Together, they made the decision straightforward.
What the Bills Actually Look Like Now
The proof, of course, is in the numbers. And Artur’s early results are hard to argue with.
His electricity costs have dropped sharply since installation. So sharply, in fact, that the fixed standing charge has started to feel like the significant part of the bill.
“Our electricity costs have fallen significantly,” he says. “At the moment, on some days, it feels as though the standing charge is becoming one of the biggest parts of the bill, which is quite a nice problem to have!”
That’s a meaningful shift. For most households, the unit rate is the dominant cost on an electricity bill. When the standing charge starts to feel large by comparison, it signals that actual consumption from the grid has dropped dramatically.
There’s also an additional income stream that many people don’t fully factor in before going solar: the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), which pays households for surplus electricity they export back to the national grid.
“We’re also being paid for the electricity we export back to the grid, so that’s an additional benefit,” Artur notes.
Projected Annual Savings: £500 to £600
Artur is careful to caveat his figures, as you’d expect from someone with a financial planning background. The system is still new, and a full winter with the panels hasn’t happened yet.
“It’s still very early to give an accurate figure because we haven’t yet experienced a full winter with the system,” he says. “But based on what I’ve seen so far, including both the reduction in electricity we buy from the grid and the income from exporting surplus electricity, I think somewhere around £500 to £600 per year is a reasonable initial estimate.”
That figure accounts for both reduced grid consumption and SEG export income. As the system beds in across all seasons, that estimate is likely to become clearer, and potentially more accurate.
From Apprehensive to “I Love the Solar Panels”
One detail in Artur’s story that will resonate with a lot of households: he wasn’t the only one who needed convincing.
“My wife was quite apprehensive about the idea at the beginning,” he admits. It’s a common dynamic. One person in the household does the research and gets excited; the other has questions, doubts, or simply isn’t sure it’s worth the disruption.
The best answer to that hesitation, it turns out, isn’t a spreadsheet. It’s the first bill.
“Now she says, ‘I love the solar panels!'”
